Summer Term
May
Drawing Club:
This January, the stories we have explored in drawing club are: Snail and the whale, Mr Benn – Spaceman, Goldielocks and the three bears, The way back home and Wacky Races.
Maths:
In addition to their exploration of the natural world, Meerkat class has been busy developing their mathematical thinking this term. The children have enjoyed learning about shapes, using them creatively to build pictures and patterns, and even learning the word "rotate" as they experimented with turning shapes to fit their designs. Their confidence has grown as they've begun to see shapes not just as objects, but as building blocks for imagination and problem-solving. We’ve also been exploring the concept of counting things we cannot see, such as sounds or movements, which has helped the children strengthen their number sense and develop a deeper understanding of abstract counting. It’s been fantastic to see their curiosity and confidence grow through hands-on, meaningful learning experiences.
Phonics:
The children's phonics skills are continuously improving. This term we have recapped on our phase 3 sounds.
Continuous provision:
Meerkat class have had an amazing term full of excitement, creativity, and discovery. The children have been busy exploring their continuous provision, diving into themes like camping, postcard writing, and space. They’ve set up tents, pretended to toast marshmallows, and used their imaginations to go on camping adventures right in the classroom. Through writing postcards, they’ve shared their ideas and practised their early writing skills in a fun and meaningful way. Our space theme sparked plenty of curiosity too, with the children asking questions, building rockets, and learning all about planets and stars. It’s been wonderful to see them so engaged and enthusiastic about their learning.
June / July
Drawing Club:
This January, the stories we have explored in drawing club are:
- The three little pigs
- Tiddler
- Trapdoor
- Hansel and Gretal
- The 100 decker bus
- The Pink Panther
- Where the wild things are.
Maths:
In this final term, Meerkat class will be spending time recapping all the fantastic learning they’ve done in maths throughout the year. We’ll be revisiting key concepts like counting, number recognition, simple addition and subtraction, and working with shapes. This will help to strengthen the children’s understanding and build their confidence as they get ready for the next stage of their learning journey. Through fun, hands-on activities and real-life problem solving, we’ll be making sure everyone has the chance to consolidate their skills and celebrate just how far they’ve come in maths this year.
Phonics:
This term, Meerkat class have been working incredibly hard on Phase 4 phonics, and the progress has been amazing! The children have shown fantastic focus and determination as they’ve learned to blend and segment longer words with adjacent consonants, such as “frog,” “trap,” and “bump.” Their confidence in reading and writing has really grown, and it’s been wonderful to see them applying their phonics knowledge across all areas of learning. Whether sounding out tricky words in their writing or spotting familiar sounds in books, their enthusiasm and progress have truly stood out.
Continuous provision:
In continuous provision this term, Meerkat class have been learning all about maps and travel, and it’s sparked so much curiosity and imagination. The children have been creating their own maps, using symbols and drawings to show different places and journeys. They’ve explored globes, atlases, and simple directions, learning how we use maps to find our way around. Through role play, they’ve gone on all sorts of adventures – from train rides to exploring new countries – developing their understanding of the world and building language skills along the way. It’s been a fantastic way to combine creativity with early geography skills in a hands-on, meaningful way.
