Autumn Term

December

 A festive finale!

We finished the term on a high, with a trip to London. We made a quick stop at the National Portrait Gallery before watching the English National Ballet perform The Nutcracker at the London Coliseum. It was a fantastic experience and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the show. As an added bonus we also got to see Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree, lots of Christmas lights and landmarks on our travels - we spotted the London Eye, The Tower of London and the Shard, to name a few!

In our history unit we are engrossed in the world of the Shang Dynasty, investigating the (17) emperors and debating how one family could be in power for over 500 years - the class had lots of views and opinions on this topic!

In our English lessons we used Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carole" as our inspiration. We imagines we were children in Victorian England, writing a letter to Scrooge, persuading him to become our ambassador for the Christmas Spirit. This was an amazing opportunity for us to investigate Victorian workhouses and toys of the era.  At the end of the unit, the children used all they had learnt to write, independently, a persuasive letter to the Grinch. Persuading him to come to England to promote Christmas during the cost of living crisis.

We got our needles out in DT, designing and making our very own Christmas tree decorations. Everyone started with the same basic snowman template and let their creativity flow!

November

In our writing lessons we have started a new unit, using A Christmas Carol as inspiration, we are writing a letter to Scrooge to persuade him to change his humbug ways and become the jolliest, most merry champion of Christmas the Victorian era has ever known. Whilst in our reading lessons, we have moved onto a new text and are now reading 5 Children and It by E Nesbit. We can’t believe it’s over 100 years old!

In Science, we are travelling out of this world, looking at Earth and Space. We have currently analysing the Earth's axis and looking at how 'just 23.5 degrees' can cause the world to have seasons. We have also been looking at the phases of the moon, taking the time to track what is happening this month.

In PSHE we are focusing upon anti-bullying. We have recapped the different types of bullying. We have also been looking at the difference between stereotyping, discrimination and prejudice and the impact these can have on someone.

Holding a pen is so last year! Our DT unit focused upon electrical circuits. In our lessons we investigated (took apart) an existed product and identified the factors that affect the doodlers form and function. We then used this information to design, develop and manufacture our own Doodlers!

A busy month of writing!

We have finished writing our narratives inspired on The Journey  by Francesca Sanna, we spent time imagining what it would be like to move house and start a new school - some of us shared real-life experiences. Our grammar focus for this writing was relative clauses.

Our second piece of writing was based on Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce, we imagined we were Liam driving the Porsche, hit the big red button and zoomed to space! We really enjoyed this book and our writing is fantastic, we really let our imaginations fly!

September

It has been a busy start to the year for our Year 6 pupils, with a three day residential trip to Hilltop Outdoor Centre during the first week! This trip provided the pupils with a fantastic opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their team skills. It was amazing to see their confidence grow over a short time and see them supporting and encouraging each other in a completely new (and in some cases daunting) environment.
