Earhart

Welcome to Earhart Class!

Amelia Earhart was born in 1897 in Kansas, USA. She was an American Pilot famous for becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia set many aviation records throughout her lifetime. Amelia tragically disappeared in 1937 when she attempted to become the first woman to fly around the world. Her courage and determination were an inspiration to everyone, especially women and young girls.

Summer Term - 2023

Welcome back! We hope you've had a lovely Easter break.

We have another exciting term coming up. We will be starting our new book for English, "Traction Man is Here!" where we will have plenty of opportunities to write in a range of styles, focusing now on cementing our new skills into our writing fluently.

Our new science units this term will focus on 'Use of everyday materials' and 'Plants'.

We will also have units in history, art, computing, DT and geography.

A reminder to year 2 adults;

Year 2 will be completing their SATs papers this term, so it is important to be reading at home at least 5 times a week and accessing Numbots for at least 20 minutes a week.

Spring Term - 2023

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable half term. We have a busy term coming up with plenty of opportunities for children to show of their newly developed writing skills as well as showing their creativity with art and DT units. We will be looking at some art, science, computing, DT and geography this term.

A reminder of the importance of reading at home. School expectations are to read at home at least 5 times a week. This is crucial to the development of children's reading and increasing their 'reading for pleasure' attitude.

Geography Exploration

- Thursday 5th January 2023 -

For our geography unit this half term, we have been looking at human and physical features. We learnt about what human and physical features are and thought of some examples of each type of feature. To immerse ourselves in this learning, we walked around the school grounds with whiteboards to note down any human and physical features we could find. When we returned to class, we shared our findings with our peers.

Wassily Kandinsky

- January 2023 -

Our art unit for this half term had a focus on the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We learnt about who this artist was and the years he was actively creating artwork. We looked at a range of art pieces created by Kandinsky and looked at the skills and features he used in his artwork. We looked at primary colours and what other colours we can make from these primary colours. We also created some art pieces inspired by Kandinsky's own work.

Building a Rocket

- Friday 3rd February 2023 -

As part of a computing unit, we designed and built our own rockets. We started of the unit creating a list on laptops of the materials we needed to build our rocket. This gave children the opportunity to work on their typing skills. Children then used Sketchpad to design their own rocket, recalling their previous learning of how to use this website to design. We looked at the importance of instructions and how specific these must be and why they need to be in the correct order. Finally, leaning more into DT, we had the opportunity to build our own rockets using plastic bottles and other materials. Children were also lucky that parents were invited in for 25 minutes at the end of the day where they were able to decorate their rockets with their adults.

Constructing a Windmill

- Thursday 9th March 2023 -

For our structures DT unit, we designed and constructed our own windmills. Children were given a client that they had to design their windmill for based on the criteria set out by the client. We discussed the importance of ensuring our designs matched the criteria set out by the client. Children were able to use and develop a range of skills here, such as fine motor skills with cutting around templates.

Making Puppets

- Friday 31st March 2023 -

For our textiles DT unit, we designed and made our own Easter themed puppets. We chose to either make a bunny or chick puppet. This task involved using our cutting skills to carefully cut around card and fabric. To help us with this, we safety pinned our back template onto the fabric to prevent it from moving around whilst cutting. We chose our coloured fabric for the main part of the puppet and then picked out other coloured fabrics to make key features, such as eyes and ears. We though carefully about which colours would stand our best again our main fabric colour.

Autumn Term - 2022

Welcome to Earhart class!

Earhart class is a mixed year 1 and 2 class.

We have high expectations in year 1/2 and the children in our class are all eager to learn. Throughout the year, children will be learning to become more independent with their tasks and activities around the school and build their confidence in themselves whilst developing their skills.

Science Investigation

- Tuesday 20th September 2022 -

We have been learning about living things and their habitats, and part of our learning was exploring and discussing what living things (animals and plants) can be found around our school environment. Children went out with clipboards and a chart to keep track of any living things they find around the school grounds. Upon returning to class, we had a group discussion about what everyone found and reminding ourselves on the characteristics of all living things.

Hero and Villains Day

- Monday 17th October 2023 -

Hero and Villains Day was part of a writing and creativity day each year group took part in. Children were able to dress up as either heroes or villains to fully immerse themselves in the days activities. Each class focused on a book, year 1 and 2 focused on the book 'Supertato'. In response to reading this book, children created their very own super or evil vegetable that could be in the book. Children designed their character and then wrote a character description to go with their new character.

DT - Making Smoothies

- Tuesday 1st November 2023 -

Children had a whole day of DT activities where they were creating their own smoothies. Children picked out what fruits they were going to include in their smoothies and taste tested each fruit to complete a table analysing each fruit, looking at the taste, the texture etc. As a class, we decided on three different smoothies. Children practiced their knife control skills by cutting the fruits up ready for the blender. Children were able to taste each of the smoothies they made and decide which one they liked best. Once children decided on their favourite smoothie, they designed a smoothie carton, ensuring the ingredients were clearly displayed on the carton.

Making Moving Story Books

- Monday 19th December 2023 -

We decided to combine our DT unit with some Christmas crafts by creating our very own moving Christmas story book! The children had the whole day to create these books, allowing them to take their time with them. First children had to design and colour the backgrounds of their books pages, as well as creating their characters. Children had to make slits on their books to allow their characters the freedom to move around the page. Children then brought all their pages together and designed a front cover to complete their books.

Class Christmas Party

- Wednesday 21st December 2023 -

To celebrate the end of the year together, we had a fantastic class party. We started off our party with decorating our own biscuits with icing and plenty of toppings. After eating our delicious biscuits, we played some classic party games, including pass the parcel and musical statues where lots of prizes were won. Children then took another food break to eat lots of party food before finishing their party by playing 'ring toss' - trying to throw the wings onto the antlers.

Merry Christmas!
